ICGN Annual Conference, Toronto 17:15– 19:15, Monday 19 June: Welcome Reception, hosted by Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. Featuring Opening Remarks from Catherine McCall, CEO, CCGG

2023 marks the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance, Canada’s preeminent institutional investor corporate governance and stewardship organization. For two decades, CCGG has been an important voice in the Canadian capital markets, advocating on behalf of investors to ensure that good corporate governance, including as it relates to environmental and social matters, remains a focal point for Canadian boards, regulators and legislators.  With the support of our members, currently collectively managing approximately $5.5 trillion in assets, CCGG continues to advance corporate governance [and stewardship goals], from fundamental governance and shareholder democracy issues, such as CEO/Chair separation, majority voting and say on pay, which were the focus when CCGG first began its advocacy work and are now considered governance table stakes, to the challenging ESG issues currently facing investors.  After 20 years, we can point to tangible and measurable progress, supported by comprehensive research, both at the policy level and around board room tables across Canada, in each of these areas.  CCGG’s development of internationally recognized Canadian stewardship principles for the Canadian market has provided institutional investors with valuable assistance in meeting their responsibilities to beneficiaries and clients in navigating the complex ESG world that today confronts investors and issuers alike.  Against this rapidly changing landscape, CCGG’s deep experience with corporate governance advocacy and effectiveness at achieving impactful change at the board level, mean that its voice will be even more necessary and powerful in the years to come.

CCGG’s members are Canadian institutional investors that together manage approximately $5.5 trillion in assets on behalf of pension funds, mutual fund unit holders, and other institutional and individual investors. CCGG promotes good governance practices, including the governance of environmental and social matters, at Canadian public companies and assists institutional investors in meeting their stewardship responsibilities. CCGG also works toward the improvement of the regulatory environment to best align the interests of boards and management with those of their investors and to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the Canadian capital markets.
