For 20 years, Robert Walker led the advancement of responsible investing at NEI Investments, a Canadian investment management company headquartered in Toronto and owned by Canada's financial cooperative system. As Head of ESG Services Robert built, designed and implemented NEI's Responsible Investing Program, a set of activities designed to enhance risk-adjusted returns to investors and create long-term sustainable value for all stakeholders. Core elements of the program include corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance evaluations, corporate engagement and creating a public policy environment conducive to ESG investing and corporate sustainability. Under Robert's leadership, NEI has been at the Canadian forefront of working through industry associations and other standards-setting organizations to advance robust ESG practices in Canada and globally. Under the governance category specifically, NEI has provided more than a dozen submissions, beginning in 2004, to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Canadian Securities Administrators, the Toronto Stock Exchange, the Government of Canada the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance and ICGN. 

 

In his new role at LVC Strategies, Robert is consulting on ESG approaches and making forays into the world of impact investing with a focus on organic wine production, the restoration of heritage and local community development opportunities. 

 

Robert is currently enrolled in the Directors Education Program at the Institute of Corporate Directors. He is a past Governance Fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors and a current member of Governance Professionals Canada. Robert has worked extensively with the Principles for Responsible Investment and is a member of the board of the International Institute for Sustainable Development, a top 10 global environmental think-tank, where he chairs the Nominating and Governance Committee and is co-leading the organization through a CEO-search process. 

 

Robert speaks widely on the responsibility of investment institutions to advance best governance practices and has participated in several United Nations, Government of Canada and multi-stakeholder initiatives in support of enhanced ESG performance among publicly-traded corporations. Under Robert's guidance, the Responsible Investing Program at NEI received numerous awards from both the investment industry and the world of sustainability.
