2009 Yearbook

ICGN Yearbook 2009

Welcome to the 2009 ICGN Yearbook. This edition of the Yearbook comes at a critical time for corporate governance, too. The global financial crisis and ensuing recession has rocked the world economy to its core, and has prompted the governance community worldwide to take a step back and ask ‘what went wrong’?

The articles in this year’s collection reflect that spirit of change – a spirit which also permeated the ICGN annual conference. Inside, you will hear from investors, from regulators, from academics and from corporates all around the world about the impact of the economic downturn, what it means for governance and what the next steps should be.

ICGN Yearbook 2008

Welcome to the 2008 edition of the ICGN Yearbook. This year’s collection of articles spans the global debate on corporate governance. It also provides a wide range of regional commentary which draws on the ICGN Membership’s views and expertise from around the world.

The Yearbook will not only provide depth and breadth of background for our discussions at the annual conference and AGM, it also serves as a reference point for the international corporate governance community. This year we are bringing together reflections on new developments in the capital markets, and the challenges that continue to be posed by globalisation.

I am pleased to present the third ICGN Yearbook and to welcome you to South Africa. It is an honour that a conference of this significance and magnitude is being held in Africa for the first time.

Once again the annual ICGN conference has attracted speakers of the highest quality. We have been able to draw on rich experience and insight in the excellent articles from thought leaders in our field, some of whom are also speakers at this year’s conference. This Yearbook intends to continue the global dialogue from previous years and I am certain that the topics covered this time will provide the basis for rigorous and rewarding debate.

ICGN Yearbook 2006

Welcome to the 2006 Yearbook. This second edition illustrates the range and depth of corporate governance thinking and practice around the world. Much is drawn from the ICGN membership, and our partners, who have shared their insights from Asia, Europe, North America, the Middle East and North Africa, and Latin America, from many of the leading countries engaged with reform: China, Brazil, South Africa, India and Korea plus the USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, and many others.

The ICGN Yearbook brings together thinking from the leading practitioners around the world, including the international bodies responsible for policy development and reform — the European Commission, World Bank Group and Organisation for Co-operation and Development. We are grateful to all our contributors, and especially our Guest Editor for this edition, Holly Gregory.

ICGN Yearbook 2005

Welcome to the inaugural International Corporate Governance Network Yearbook. It seemed fitting to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the ICGN with a substantive initiative. The Yearbook is intended to be a memento of the annual conference, a point of reference on topical governance issues of the day and a source of information on ICGN matters (such as your log in for the members’ section of the ICGN website!).

As you will note, the articles in the main body of the Yearbook echo the themes of the conference and most are contributed by speakers. We hope that you will have an opportunity to read the articles in advance of the relevant plenary and workshop sessions. The idea is that they will get you thinking about the issues to be debated, spark some reactions and help you frame your contribution to the debate.
