Alastair Ross Goobey memorial scholarship
The Alastair Ross Goobey (ARG) Memorial Scholarship was established jointly by the ICGN and Hermes Fund Managers in April 2008 to commemorate Alastair’s contribution as a pioneer of the international corporate governance movement.
‘In reflecting on the value of organisations such as the ICGN we should not overlook the very important social function. At times, pioneers can find themselves isolated. Equally, those who have been involved long-term can run out of energy. Support from others who share the same goals helps enormously to resuscitate spirits. There are also significant benefits to testing your arguments with those who are like minded but would naturally take a different approach. Even when the debate gets heated, it remains friendly and instilled with a sense of common purpose.’ Alastair Ross Goobey, Former Chief Executive, Hermes Fund Management & Former ICGN Chairman
The annual scholarship endowment is awarded to one individual from among ICGN scholarship recipients displaying strong leadership in the field of corporate governance despite facing the challenges of working in a difficult or low-income environment. Successful candidates receive a bursary towards the cost of research for a paper to be distributed by the ICGN, in addition to receiving financial assistance to join the ICGN and attend the Annual Conference.
The 2009 Memorial Scholar
The 2009 scholarship was awarded to Pamela Akivaga, a Legal Officer at the Capital Markets Authority (Kenya).
“My experience as a 2009 Annual ICGN conference was amazing. I had the unique opportunity to meet and interact with individuals from various jurisdictions all of whom had different ideas and experiences in the sphere of corporate governance. The speakers gave great insight into new trends in the sphere of corporate governance which I am confident will be beneficial to Kenya as it endeavors to become a regional leader in corporate governance practice. I believe that as a country, we have a lot to learn about international practice in corporate governance and look I look forward to participating in future conferences and bringing this knowledge home.”
The 2008 Memorial Scholar
The 2008 scholarship was awarded to Rashedur Rahman, a Research Associate of the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute:
“Participation in the 2008 ICGN Annual Conference has enabled me to increase my knowledge of international trends and developments in corporate governance and best practices around the world. I hope to share what I have learnt with relevant stakeholders in Bangladesh including the government, regulators, public and private enterprises, academics and students. This is through research, seminars, roadshows, training and other capacity building initiatives. I can also highlight the importance of good corporate governance practices for building investor confidence to attract the foreign capital necessary for the economic development of Bangladesh.”
