Gala Dinner: Changgyeong Palace
19 June, 18:30 - 21:30
The ICGN Gala Dinner is being held in the historic Changgyeong Palace, one of Korea's National Treasures. Delegates will benefit from a rare opportunity to dine in one of the few remaining buildings of the Joseon Dynesty, dating back to 1418. The Palace was built for the former King Taejong and was used to host banquets for international diplomatic missions.
Changgyeong Palace has an array of architectural quirks of the Joseon period. The main entry gate, Honghwamun, faces eastward rather than the traditional south, largely to avoid facing Jongmyo, the ancestral shrine. The ceiling of Honghwamun features striking lotus blossom motifs reflecting early Joseon style. Passing through the main gates, delegates will come to Okcheongyo, a traditional stone bridge that arches over a small stream. Walking further on, there is Myeongjeongmum, a stately hall used as an office for Korean royalty. The exquisite ceiling inside the hall depicts gold-leafed phoenixes which indicate the site as the Queen's administration.
